Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS);faqs.107 -------- Subject: TR13. I need makedev, but my DWB doesn't come with it. A freeware version called "mkfont" is available from c.s.m, and is also included in Jetroff 1.0. The Jetroff version is to be preferred because it's been extended a bit more to be an exact "makedev" replacement w.r.t. command line arguments. -------- Subject: TR14. Nroff/Troff on DOS machines Arto Viitanen (av@ohdake.cs.uta.fi) has used djgpp (the MSDOS port of gcc 2.01) to compile groff-1.05 for MSDOS. The binaries are available at garbo.uwasa.fi in /pc/unix. The file is groff396.zip and it's 725 Kb. This apparently works quite well, and has been used to process manuscripts in excess of 400 pages. Elan, Image Network, and SoftQuad have commercial versions of DWB for DOS machines. They tend to be a bit pricey - in the $500-$1200 range. There are many freeware versions of nroff that have either already been ported, or should be easy to port to DOS. For example, C implementations of Kernighan and Plauger's "Software Tools" "roff" (see Ozan Yigit's implementation available from comp.sources.unix). [roff isn't a complete implementation of nroff, depends on what you need.] Related: Ghostscript can be used on DOS to preview the output of any PostScript-producing application, including groff. If you do use GhostScript, make sure that you get the latest version with the good fonts. GhostScript also contains CGA and VGA drivers for on-screen preview. I'd appreciate any other leads on DOS nroff/troffs. -------- Subject: TR15. What books can I get about DWB? General: Document Formatting and Typesetting on the UNIX System, 2 volumes, Nerain Gehani, Silicon Press, ISBN 0-9615336-2-5. A very good general reference; covers troff, the preprocessors, and most of the popular macro packages. Typesetting Tables on the UNIX System, Henry McGilton, Mary McNabb. Trilithon Press, ISBN 0-9626289-0-5. A very good, very complete reference and tutorial on TBL. Unix Text Processing, Dale Dougherty & Tim O'Reilly, Hayden Books, ISBN 0-672-46291-5. A good discussion not just of troff (ms & mm), tbl, eqn, and pic, but also vi and ex, sed, and awk. Troff typesetting for Unix Systems, Sandra L. Emerson & Karen Paulsell (kjp@well?) Prentice-Hall, 0-13-930959-4. This is a good book for people wishing to write raw troff (as in rolling your own macros) troff-Programmierung: proffessionelle Textverarbeitung und Schriftsatz unter UNIX, Claus Schirmer, Hanser Verlag 1990, ISBN 3-446-15649-6. Aren't the Tiny Toons just offspring of the originals (Plucky is Daffy's son, Dizzy is the Son of Taz, etc.)? With one exception, *none* of the Tiny Toons are sons and daughters of the original classic characters, nor are they the Looney Toons as little kids. The one exception to this is Gogo, who, according to TTA writer Paul Dini, is the son of the original dodo bird from "Porky In Wackyland". 1.4 How do you spell Hampton's [sic] name? It's HAMTON. There is *no* 'p' in HAMTON, despite it being misspelled in the credits a couple of times ... 1.5 In what parts of the world is TTA shown? Jenny Lerew has worked on the staff of Tiny Toon Adventures at the Warner studios in Sherman Oaks since 1989, originally as a character layout artist, presently as a storyboard artist. She's done layout on "Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow", YOU ASKED FOR IT, HER WACKY HIGHNESS (the Elmer Presley song number!), GANGBUSTERS, THE ACME HOME SHOPPING SHOW, most of the layout for "The Field Trip" (and including writing some Babs dialogue and co-writing the "Squash & Stretch" song), and did Elmyra's cheetah-skin scenes in HOW I SPENT MY VACATION. Her storyboard credits include the upcoming "Horror of Slumber Party Mountain" and Act II of "The Return of Batduck". Needless to say, she knows a lot about the inner workings of the show and about the animation production process. But if you have a question for her, ask it on the newsgroup first and see if someone else can answer it -- Jenny's a very busy gal! :-) 4.3 Why did Warner drop Kennedy Cartoons as an animation house after the first season? If you wish to have your newsreader refrain from showing you postings with a certain title or by a certain author, you can create a kill file for your newsreader to reference. Let's say that you wish to `kill' all posts made by a certain user. Using the `rn' or `trn' newsreader, you would type a [CTRL]-K while in read mode to begin editing the kill file, and then type the following: /From: username@sitename.com/h:j This will look for articles that come with "From: username@sitename.com" in the header, junk them, and then display the subject lines of titles that just got zapped. For names of Subject titles, you would type something like this: /: *Does Buster floss?/:j /: *New Tiny Toon Wheat Cakes/:j When finished, save the kill file in the normal manner for the editor you're using. For the `nn' newsreader, type a capital K when viewing the contents of a newsgroup. nn will then ask you a few questions on whether it is a Subject or a Name, duration of time that the posts are to be killed, etc. Simply answer the questions accordingly. 5.2 What are the various guides and lists floating around alt.tv.tiny-toon, and how do I get them? "Dr. Roger Rabbit", is a net.resident who posts stories about some of the TTA characters which contain explicit sex and violence. While there's nothing inherently wrong with that, he also drops in occasionally citing facts and references from his stories as if they are "canon", or straight from the actual show. Newcomers unfamiliar with his antics sometimes misinterpret these references as real trivia about the TTA characters. Keep in mind that they are not -- no matter how authoritative it may seem.
